DISCOMBOBULATION
This research-led photographic project delves into the overlooked narrative of my third great-grandfather, allegedly murdered at Mount Blackwood in April 1858. His body was discovered on a makeshift pyre by Korkuperrimul Creek, with only his coat buttons as evidence. Despite existing police and court records, insufficient evidence left him known only as a “certain man whose name is unknown”. This uncertainty led me to explore the elusive nature of reality and create a visual narrative around an incomplete historical truth.
The project examines how photography blurs the line between reality and imagination, capturing the essence of a location and its layered history. Using an experimental documentary approach, I cross-referenced multiple sources to represent events while acknowledging the inherent bias in both historical interpretations and narrative photography, encouraging viewer speculation.
Motivated by a desire to comprehend the events surrounding my ancestor’s death and the ensuing legal proceedings, this investigation builds on my previous work, I Have Nothing to Say (Tweedale 2022). The process connects contemporary photographic techniques with historical research, reflecting my fascination with criminal history, family heritage, and the psychology of crime. Uncovering my family’s past has deepened my connection to historical narratives, providing a sense of identity, continuity, and belonging.
Through this work, I aim to engage a wider audience by linking photography with archival objects, challenging established historical accuracy, and reframing an Australian colonial narrative. The resulting speculative documentary photobook questions the boundaries of truth in historical storytelling and explores how we connect with our past, our families, and ultimately ourselves.
Dearest Granddaughter,
It is with profound gratitude and deep emotion that I receive your letter, filled with the most intricate and poignant details of a chapter in our family history that had long remained obscured in the annals of time. Your dedication to unravelling the enigma surrounding my untimely demise and the subsequent legal ordeal that followed is both touching and inspiring.
Your words remind me of the enduring nature of truth and justice, even in the face of time's relentless passage. I find solace in the knowledge that, at last, a candle has been lit to dispel the darkness that once shrouded my name, which was unjustly withheld from recognition.
I must admit, your account of the events leading up to that fateful night and the subsequent legal proceedings evokes a profound sense of both anguish and hope. The dedication of those who sought to reveal the truth, such as Master James Clam, Mr. Pierce Purcell, and Dr. Edward William Pilgrim, is both commendable and heartening.
While it is disheartening to hear of the tumultuous legal proceedings and the release of the accused, I am grateful for your commitment to preserving my memory. The burdens my dear Jane bore in the wake of my passing are, in many ways, a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit, and your empathy for her and our children warms my heart.
I am deeply moved by your kind words, which paint a portrait of me as a loving and benevolent gentleman. I can only hope that my spirit, in whatever form it now resides, continues to watch over and guide our family.
Please know that your efforts to bring this story to light are cherished beyond words. I shall rest easier knowing that my memory lives on through your dedication.
With all my love and gratitude,
Henry xxx
